8h 2minFantasy reading ambience
Reading with an ambience gives the book a place: a fire crackling through a winter novel, rain on the window for a mystery, a distant tavern for a fantasy saga. The music stays at the back, without lyrics; the sounds of the place do the rest. Our reading ambiences were composed that way, and many readers come back to them every evening.
Fantasy readers are at home here: Sonaë is a world of ten realms with its own libraries, inns and enchanted forests, and every ambience is a scene from it. If you read romantasy, epic fantasy or cozy fantasy, you will find a room that matches the book. The Guardian of Sonaë can also suggest one: tell it you are reading and describe the setting.

Match the ambience to the book
Fantasy and medieval: taverns, ancient libraries, elven forests. Contemporary novels: rain on a window, a quiet café, a living room with a fire. Poetry and essays: a garden, a lake, a morning forest. Night and thrills: manors, misty graveyards, distant storms, which you will find on the Halloween page.
Read without fatigue
Keep the volume low and steady, and one ambience for the whole session: the ear stops listening after a few minutes and only the page is left. The six- to eight-hour videos avoid any interruption. If you read on a tablet, play the ambience from a speaker rather than the same device, so notifications never cut it.
In practice
- Low volume, one ambience per book.
- Fire and rain for winter; a garden and a lake for summer.
- Compose your own reading background in the Sound Studio.

Frequently asked questions
What music helps you read without distraction?
Slow music without lyrics, mixed with a continuous sound such as rain or a fire. Melodies that stand out, and songs, capture attention; our reading ambiences keep the music back. Our guide on reading music goes through the research.
Are there ambiences for reading fantasy?
Yes, that is the heart of Sonaë: taverns, medieval libraries, enchanted forests, castles. See also the fairy music page and the D&D ambience page for taverns and dungeons.
Can I set a timer?
Yes, in the Sound Studio: choose a duration and the ambience fades out. Useful for reading in bed.
