6h 3minNatural white noise for sleep
White noise masks intrusive sounds by occupying every frequency at once. Synthetic white noise works, but many people find it harsh over a whole night. Nature produces a gentler version: a waterfall, heavy rain, surf on a beach, wind in a pass. Same masking effect, warmer texture, and a place to imagine.
The ambiences below favor those continuous textures. They suit light sleepers, city nights, a baby’s nap at a very low volume, and anyone who finds total silence harder than a little sound.

White, pink or brown: which one?
White noise is the brightest and the most effective at covering voices. Pink noise, close to steady rain, is more balanced and usually better tolerated all night. Brown noise, close to a distant waterfall or a low surf, is the deepest and the most soothing. Our guide on brown, pink and white noise goes into the research; the short answer is pink for most people, brown if you like a rumble.
Precautions
Keep the volume moderate: the sound should mask, not dominate. For a child, place the speaker more than two meters away and stay below the level of a quiet conversation. Never use noise to drown out something loud; move the source or fix the window instead.
In practice
- A waterfall or steady rain for the whole night.
- Regular waves for naps.
- Moderate volume, speaker away from the bed.

Frequently asked questions
Is natural white noise as effective as synthetic?
For masking, yes, as long as the recording is continuous and has enough low end. Waterfalls and heavy rain do. The advantage of natural noise is that it stays pleasant hour after hour, which synthetic hiss rarely does.
Which sound for a very light sleeper?
A distant waterfall or surf, played low: deep, steady and without any event. Avoid thunderstorms and forest ambiences with birds for the night.
Can I use it all night?
Yes. At a low volume there is no downside, and most people sleep better when the sound stays on until morning rather than stopping mid-night.
